Long before social media and streaming services ruled the internet, there was America Online. In those early days, Sean found himself captivated by the digital frontier. He was a fan of WWE – larger-than-life wrestlers with bold personas and dramatic storylines. One night, he stumbled into a chat room where people were pretending to be their favorite wrestlers, typing out promos and acting out matches in real time.

For Sean, it was a revelation. This was something new – storytelling mixed with competition, and it was happening live, with people from all over the world. It was called roleplaying, and it was the first time Sean could craft stories alongside others.

The deeper he explored, the more he discovered. Some chat rooms took it further, creating roleplaying federations. Writers would craft promos, and a general manager – or GM – would judge the work, deciding the winner of each match based on creativity and effort. The concept fascinated Sean. But after trying a few federations, he realized something: he didn’t always like the way things were run.

So, Sean did what he often did when something wasn’t to his liking – he created his own.

It was called UCF – the Ultimate Championship Federation.

UCF

At just a teenager, Sean was running his own wrestling league. Twice a week, he sat in front of his computer writing massive, 20-page shows filled with matches, commentary, and cliffhangers that left players on the edge of their seats. He didn’t just write matches – he created a universe. Ringside announcers exchanged witty banter, backstage interviews set up rivalries, and long-running storylines kept the community hooked.

For six years, this was Sean’s world.

UCF was more than a game. It was Sean’s first experience building something from scratch. He designed websites, created logos, and even made video promos. It combined everything he loved – storytelling, media, and leadership. This wasn’t just playing with action figures or scribbling in notebooks. His “characters” were real people, each with their own ideas and personalities.

And in this world, Sean made the rules.

But leadership came with challenges. One day, a member of UCF grew restless. He left, starting his own rival federation and convincing a few others to follow him. Sean was furious. It felt like betrayal.

For a moment, he considered lashing out. But instead, he took a different path – he wished them luck. In fact, he even joined their league as a player.

Running a federation wasn’t easy. After a while, the rival organization folded under the weight of the work. The former rival returned to UCF, not just as a member but as one of Sean’s strongest supporters.

Looking back, Sean saw the experience for what it was – an early lesson in leadership. Sometimes, being a good leader meant standing back and letting others learn on their own.

For over six years, Sean sharpened his skills, building not just UCF, but the foundation of a leadership style he would carry with him for the rest of his life.

And while the wrestling rings may have been fictional, the lessons were very real.
